SAP SE is a German multinational software company based in Walldorf, Baden-Württemberg. It is one of the world’s leading producers of software for the management of business processes, developing solutions that facilitate effective data processing and information flow across organisations.

In 1972, five former IBM employees (Dietmar Hopp, Hasso Plattner, Hans-Werner Hector, Klaus Tschira, and Claus Wellenreuther)  founded the company.

SAP has been industry-leading ERP software provider. ERP stands for “enterprise resource planning”, software includes programmes for all core business areas, such as procurement, production, materials management, sales, marketing, finance, and human resources (HR).

SAP now has more than 100 solutions covering all business functions, and the largest cloud portfolio of any provider.

SAP when formed was called Systemanalyse und Programmentwicklung in German which translates to “System Analysis and Program Development” in English.

“SAP” now self claim the acronymn stands for Systems, Applications, and Products in Data Processing.

As of Q1 2023, SAP employs 105,132 full time employees.

It is an initialism, not an acronym, therefore, it is pronounced as individual letters (S-A-P). SAP is not pronounced as a word (“sap”).
